Dental care products

The ideal equipment

Daily cleaning is vital for healthy teeth and gums. You should clean your teeth at least twice a day. In order to effectively remove plaque you also require floss and interdental brushes. In addition to home care you should visit your dentist twice a year for a professional clean to remove hardened, unreachable plaque. We would be happy to advise you on the correct care products for your teeth.

Toothbrush
We generally recommend a toothbrush with medium, rounded, synthetic bristles with a grippable handle and the appropriate sized brush head for the user.

You should change your toothbrush every 6-8 weeks. After brushing, wash your toothbrush in clear water and leave it to dry in a beaker or cup with the head up so that it can dry completely and bacteria don't start to grow.

Toothpaste
Whether you use paste, gel or powder the most important thing is the correct level of fluoride so that your teeth receive adequate remineralisation. (Children require less fluoride than adults - please consult your dentist).

Floss and interdental brushes
Floss and interdental brushes are essential to remove the plaque between the teeth which we can't reach with the toothbrush. Children should also be encouraged to use these products once their second teeth start to come through.

Should you have difficulty flossing there are a number of products on the market which come with a special floss holder to facilitate use.

Mouthwashes
Actibacterial mouthwashes are a welcome addition to daily dental hygiene, however they cannot replace cleaning with the toothbrush.

For long-term use we recommend mouthwashes which contain amino fluoride or stannous fluoride (e.g. Meridol) or those containing essential oils (e.g. Listerine).

For short-term use following operations or during periodontal treatment we prescribe special medical mouth washes.
